Is it worth upgrading a Tokyo Marui or should I go straight to a custom build?

Thinking about picking up a proper sidearm for CQB and weekend games. I've been looking at some Tokyo Marui models over on Airsoft Station and they seem solid, but I've also seen some custom Hi-Capas that are built like tanks. Not sure if I should start with a stock TM and upgrade it piece by piece or just go all in on a custom build. Anyone here gone either route? What's worked best for you?

Well, this is quite an open question to be completely honest with you.

A completely custom Hi-capa build will, when done correctly, out-preform a stock Hi-capa with quite some margin.
But the downside on custom build is the high cost. These custom build Hi-capa's might get really expensive (more then €1000,- is easily reachable), probably. way to much for just a sidearm replica that sits on your belt for skirming.

The stock version perform quite well, even in the cold. I had one for some time, but I got quite annoyed by the plastic feeling the replica had.
I used my stock TM Hicapa for IPSC Action Air/IAPS matches, and it worked fine, but the plastic feeling was just not my thing.

I had the idea to upgrade it, but I didn't like the cost of all those upgrades I could/should be doing. Also, it's quite a time investment/hit-and-miss to upgrade well, so I started looking for other options. A sort of 'in the middle' solution.

I found the Novritsch SSP5 (5.1) with it's splitslide setup very appealing, in terms of setup and looks. The intergrated red dot sight and full metal setup were quite promising to me.
For about €500,- I would have a 'completely upgraded' Hi-capa with Reddot sight and magwell, so I decided to give this a try for IPCS Action Air/IAPS.

I still like the SSP5 5.1 a lot. It works really well for me, as I can shoot really fast, have really nice groupings and I have the idea that the replica is currently not slowing me down when running the IPSC Action Air/IAPS Stages. Which is good, as I like to improve myself a lot.

So maybe that's an idea to check out? I think you should check how much you are going to use your sidearm. It not a thing you 'must' have, as an good quality M4/AEG is always more important in regular skirmishes. But a nice side arm always creates fun times.

Good luck!
